2nd Annual Party Features Astral Pop-Up, Local Tomato Tastings and The First Taste of The ‘25 Sparkling Summer Red Wine – Tomato Season
PORTLAND, Ore.- Anxiously waiting for tomato season is an Oregon summer right of passage, and for the second year Landmass Wines ramps up the excitement with the return of their Tomato Season patio party. This one-day celebration of peak summer in Portland brings together wine lovers, food obsessives and local farmers for the release of Tomato Season, the winery’s limited-edition canned sparkling red wine.
On Saturday, July 12th, from 12–9 p.m., Landmass’ urban tasting room patio will transform into a tomato-themed party to celebrate the launch of their annual Tomato Season dry bubbly red wine – a chillable canned wine made with 100% Pinot Meunier. Expect a tomato heavy menu from the acclaimed chef duo at Portland’s Astral pop-up kitchen, tomato tastings from local growers and preservers Copihue Farm (a tomato-only CSA) and Serious Goose Farms, festive tomato attire and swag, and plenty of wine flowing throughout the day.
“Tomato Season evokes a very specific Oregon feeling,” says Landmass Winemaker and Co-founder, Melaney Schmidt. “It’s a wine that’s as fleeting as the season of tomatoes, but perfectly captures long evenings, eating outside with friends, and not taking wine too seriously. We wanted to put that feeling in a can.”
The Wine
Tomato Season has quietly become one of Landmass’ most anticipated annual releases. The limited-edition sparkling red is made from 100% Pinot Meunier sourced from the Trovato Vineyard by Furioso Vineyards, and Zenith Vineyards, both in the Willamette Valley. Packaged in 355ml cans that hold approximately two glasses of wine ($12 per can, $44 per four-pack), it’s a light, dry, juicy and chillable red with playful bubbles. “It’s as juicy as a tomato, and as dry as a hot summer day,” continues Schmidt. “It’s in the universe of an extra brut Lambrusco, but with a distinctly Pacific Northwest sensibility.”
The Event
Portland’s acclaimed Astral will pop up on the patio from 2–6 p.m., or until sold out, serving a tomato heavy menu, like a BLT Taco featuring crispy chicharrón, sungold tomatoes, pico de gallo and house-made flour tortillas. The chef-driven roving concept, led by Lauren Breneman and Chef John Boisse, recently earned recognition as one of Portland’s Best New Restaurants by Eater, and has developed a devoted following among Portland food lovers for its creative interpretation of regional Mexican flavors through a Pacific Northwest lens.
Guests will also have the chance to meet local grower Andrea Baeza of Copihue Farm, whose unique CSA is devoted entirely to tomatoes. She’ll be joined by David Oberstein from Serious Goose Farms, showcasing dried and preserved tomatoes. If the season cooperates, fresh heirloom tomatoes from both farms will also be available for tasting.
Following a packed patio last summer, Tomato Season’s release party returns as an annual celebration of Landmass’ playful approach to winemaking and its commitment to creating wines that reflect a sense of season and place.
