About

Johan Vineyards is a Demeter certified vineyard and winery, located 60 miles south of Portland and 40 miles east of the Pacific Ocean, directly at the mouth of the Van Duzer Corridor. Our vineyard is broken into 12 blocks that feature 16 different varieties, with 10 different clones of Pinot Noir & 7 of Chardonnay, multiple rootstocks, across varying aspects and soil types. The combination of all of these factors creates a diverse system, allowing ourselves and the wineries we provide fruit to an array of options to achieve complexity and balance in the resulting finished wines. Our commitment to Biodynamic farming focuses on the entire farm as one living organism, a holistic system that will showcase its own identity through the fruit it develops. Biodynamic farming combines the knowledge of premium organic viticultural practices with an understanding on how to treat the vineyard and its surrounding areas in order to achieve desired long‐term farming results. We farm to mimic the natural microbiological ecology of the soil where vines evolved. This produces vines more resistant to disease and creates a healthy natural immune system within the vine. We believe that diversity in the biological ecosystem of the vineyard and winery is essential to achieve a true expression of terroir in wine. Rather than striving for stylistic preference, we seek balance and energy in our wines. Our observations lead us to believe this energy exists in wines that are made from organic fruit sources combined with wild fermentations and minimal intervention. For this reason, we farm our vineyard and craft our wines using organic and Biodynamic methods. Our facility has never seen a cultivated yeast strain. We feel that in order to achieve the full expression of site, it is imperative to allow the native yeast from the vineyard to guide our wines through both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. We use gentle production methods, employing light punchdowns by foot in order to ensure lower extraction levels. Our aging approach for each wine depends on the vintage, with no set formula for any one wine. We often over vintage both our red and white wines, allowing the wines to hit their fullest potential before capturing this expression in bottle.

True Willamette Valley

The Willamette Valley, Oregon’s oldest wine region, has two-thirds of the state’s wineries and vineyards and is home to more than 700 wineries. Framed by the Coast Range to the west and Cascades to the east, it is recognized as one of the premier winegrowing regions in the world. At 150 miles long it offers…
